I agree Fred. Sheet metal is missing. A lot of them old furnaces had no bottom on them. They set on the ground. The ash would fall through the grate, and directly on the ground. They'd be really hot all the way to bottom. The one in the picture looks to have a plate on the bottom. The entire unit sets up on a base for air circulation. Could be a home made base.
