After reading all about coal here I made the switch.. found great deal on an original chubby no blower.. fire started right up in a basement instal but was getting no heat.. used same setup I had with wood with cold air returns ducked to door and 1 8in duct sucking up right next to stove also basement door open... with wood my basement temp would get to 90 but barely 70 with coal.. thinking had faulty thermometer I went got new 1 with same result only 300 on stove with primary wide open and damper shut and open.. Got a manometer coming but hard to think it's bad draft with 30ft centrally located chimney...help please !!!

Hi Centralmaburner, welcome. How much coal did you put in the stove? Put the thermo on the flue pipe a couple feet above the stove so we can see if all your heat is going up the chimney. If your draft is too strong you may need a baro.
edit: or a MPD

Could be top door, window, or top gasket leaking too. try the easy stuff 1st that MA suggested as that sounds like it should be a strong drafting chimney and that could do it.

Is this Chubby equipped with those little tear drop barrel vents ? If those are open that would affect the air flow thru the grates.

I would go with a MPD before a Baro. Only under grate air--no over air. I'm bettin you had a wood monster down there when doing wood. Any floor vents. How big is the house? How many floors? Lotsa info needed before solving this problem. Pix of set up would really help. Don't get to freaked out--most problems are easily fixed.

If you have air bipassing the grate area like Windy mentioned via the tear drop barrel vents and then put wood on top of the coal you basically robbed the coal fire of it's fuel, (oxygen), and the fire went out after the wood was done...I've done it. Let's start with the basics. All the air must pass through the grates, test your gaskets by closing the doors on a dollar bill and tug on it to see if it comes out, no resistance no good replace gaskets. Tractor Supply gasket kit just make sure you get the right thickness.Centralmaburner wrote: ↑Sat. Ok house is 2500 sq ft.. old stove was Vermont casting vigilant.. tear drop vents closed.. tried dollar bill trick and out half a buck( not gasket).. was warm day today so that would affect draft but my guess is starving for oxygen..

So I have 3 flues in 1 central chimney and when lit up fireplace on 1st floor and coal in basement relatively at same time (coal with primary wide open and mpd open) then naped for an hour or so(i tend to nap alot) i woke up to a 75° house and coal stove burning well but as soon as fireplace went out and coal was throttled down I woke up to a 60° house. So I opened up primary and mpd and stove didn't react at all stayed just under 300°... I'm suspicious to low draft issues but fireplace warmed up flues and help out coal stove
