Champion stoves has gotten back to me. Yes, the back wall of the 254 firebox is slanted just like the 30-95.

So I see no advantage of buying a 254, other than NOT seeing the hopper through the front load door, which is not a big deal.

The 254 is not slanted. It actually has 2 grates in it and they are linked together just like the 50-93. The 30-95 has just one grate in it and has the slant.

Fire375, Are you sure you're not thinking of the 354??? The 354 would be more like the 50-93.

The 254 would be more of the 30-95 size. However, the 254 does not have a hopper. So no real need for slanted back wall. That's why I asked. I didn't know. Dealer said 254 was slanted just like the 30-95.

Scott, for whatever it's worth the 254 also has a slightly larger firebox than the 30-95. It's 13 inches deep vs 12 on the 30-95. At least that's what the ad said the last I looked.

Thanks Jim, That answers why the 254 is rated to heat more square footage than the 30-95. It's the reason I questioned the slanted firebox to begin with. I was thinking it must have a bigger firebox. Turns out it does......... :) Still, I'd like to find out for fact whether or not the back wall of firebox is slanted like the 30-95. I'll send Dean an e-mail, then reply to this post.

That is the reason it is rated higher, it has two grates instead of the one like the 30-95.
The 254 is the little brother to the 354. Built the same only smaller.

I Thank You Fire375...

That looks like a nice little stove. I see it's brand new. Are you a dealer? Are you able to show / explain the internal damper set up? Other than no hopper, I can see the 254 being a step above the 30-95, which is a GREAT little stove. No complaints about the 30-95 performance. However, the 254, with it's dual grates (non turbo effect), and straight fire box side walls would not create clinkers like the 30-95 when run hard. The way the air / fuel mixture (Ball of Fire) comes off the 30-95's single grate, reminds me of a turbo torch. And when running hard, it will fuse ash together, creating clinkers.

For anyone reading this, when I talk about the 30-95 running hard, I'm talking about letting the little stove push itself beyond it's normal rated operating capacity. I don't think the 30-95 knows it's a small stove, and would push itself to self destruct.

Oliver, yes I do sell the Hitzer brand. In my honest opinion the 254 is a very underrated stove. It is a heating machine for its size. Sure it doesnt have a hopper but if you bank the coal up to the top of the firebrick in the back the tending time is near that of the 30-95 that has the hopper. The hopper does make it easier to just dump the coal in but me personally i dont mind shoveling it in the front door. The 254 is a very nice coal stove and I believe deserves more credit.

My coal dealer is also a Hitzer dealer. I check out the various models in his shop each time I pickup coal. I love the looks of them and would kill for a nice window view of my fire over my solid cast furnace door. He said he fires a different model each year in his shop to experience all the model's unique attributes. Last year was a 55UL stove and this year is a 354.

My dealer always speaks highly of the 254 and 354 models, especially if you plan to burn wood also.

Can you get 12-16 hour burns with a full load in the 254, at moderate heat output?

N, don't know much about either except HITZER makes one of the best. With my 50-93 on idle, hell, I've burnt 4 straight days & been able to re-coup the fire.

Dean Had gotten back to me. He described the firebox. A little late; as Fire375 already answered the firebox question. However, Dean did say the internal damper of the 254 restricts exhaust flow (only on fan model). The non-fan model; the knob at upper front center is a dummy knob.
