Have a Harman Mark 1 (picture enclosed) that was whistling thru the glass. Secondary air for the coal fire. Ok installed a baro, not much whistling now. My question is other small stoves whistle too?. Or. do they hum. Chime in with your small stove sounds.

Yes, but only those stoves that haven't learned the words to the song.

Actually, a stove "whistling" is a sign of too strong of a draft. Your adding the baro somewhat reduced the draft strength and thus the air speed.

It's high velocity air being pushed through the leak that is causing the whistle. The higher the pitch gets shows that the air is moving faster therefore the draft strength is stronger.

When only the dog can hear it,..... the stove will likely be glowing red.

With my furnace I can hear sounds while the blowers are off. The blowers are usually off for about 10 minutes while a fresh charge is brewing. Quite often there is some snap crackle pop going on with the cold coal. If it's windy outside I can hear the roar in the chimney as the baro door opens. I also notice the click and clank of the steel fire box expanding and contracting, and the woosh of the volatiles igniting.

I burned a Mark III for many years. In the early years I burned a lot of wood from property clean up - no baro. With a good hot wood fire the air would be singing through the glass vents as I heated the neighborhood!!

I scared myself one time i used some light, dry pine....that stuff burned so quick and hot the air coming through the glass vents had the glass vibrating. No more pine after that!

Storm here, I gave my Mark 3 to my brother so his cows in the milking barn can hum along.

Im not sure about noises but if i open the door with a fresh load it smells like a fart

I had a baro that would whistle. Started all of a sudden one day. It was loud and not bad at it, almost a tune. Never could figure out how it did it or stop it. It finally went away.

When the need arises I stand next to my stove and open the load door, in the past I would blame the dog.

My Vogelzang pot belly would give me the finger when I was learning to lite a coal fire and I have a box stove that would growl just before a major puff back...had to change my shorts that day and the dog was no where to be found.

When a good storm swirls around my fireplace will whistle where the cement board clocks the former damper frame. It lets me know the weather conditions without leaving the safety and warmth of the base burner.

When rocking above rated capacity (as in HAWT!), Mine has more of a rolling thunder sound.

Just be glad it ain't bagpipes!
