The stove in the pic in the earlier posted link must have a modified plate then.
I just looked at picture again. Not sure if modified plate, or not. It kind of looks original. I may have misspoke, or could have chosen better wording when I said the face of the back firebrick comes up even with the top of the side firebrick.

I should have said; the face of the back firebrick comes up higher (more close) to the top of side firebrick. Apparently, I mislead you to thinking the top of side, and back firebrick are dead even. Whether the tops of the firebrick are dead even or not, is so petty in the scheme of troubleshooting this 30-95 post. :eh: :)

The first 1000# of coal I burned was pea sized. It sure flows out of the hopper easily. Very long burn times, 24 hour shake downs was the routine. The thing I didn't like was recovery was very slow. I'd leave the ash pan open for an hour till it was up and running

I went back on google image search and found the photo I linked to this post. It was from this forum and here is a link to its whole post. Sorry for any confusion. Firebrick Layout for Hitzer 30-95?

If my petty ass owned a unit like that, the rear wall would stand up strait as it should be.

I'm curious as to just how you'd do that?

Stand a piece of metal up strait & tall enough to go at least to the top of the side brick retainers where the metal would then bend towards the back wall for support...then put fire bricks in to cover up the strait up part. Not hard to do.

I'm probably not following ya but wouldn't that effect the grates when shaking?

No.. the bottom of the fire brick would still be at the same place as the current layout is. The brick would just be vertical instead of a half-assed stand up/lay down arrangement.

Now, now windyhill4.2, Don't beat yourself up over someone else's stove design.

The back wall is slanted for directing coal towards the single grate. The back wall could not be vertical, as it would hit the hopper. The hopper needs to be towards the back, due to shallow firebox, as well as placement of heat exchanger.

If no hopper, then YES, the back wall could stand straight up. Yet, without the hopper, there'd be no extended burn time for such a little stove. I will say one thing; for a little stove, the 30-95 will crank some heat....
