Hand Fed Coal Stove: Heitzer 503
Other Heating: Oil

Post by CRAZYBOBDS » Thu. Feb. 01, 2018 3:48 am

So we were sitting nice and comfy in the living room, watching TV, warm glow of the Hitzer 503 in the background. Out of nowhere a horrific screeching as if a cat was being attacked by a mongoose on crack. Jump off the couch run 🏃‍♀️ in a circle around my first floor, realize it’s coming from the room i was just in.

Quickly narrow it down to the fireplace. Flip the off switch and rest easy knowing the local wildlife is safe.

Anyway, the left side blower won’t spin. So i remove It from the stove, i swear the thermometer only says 400 but my hands disagree after that job.

There is like melted plastic chunks inside the fan blades, it’s done.

So, now to my point. My house is freezing. Didn’t realize how much this insert relies on the blower. I ordered a new one but it’s a week out. I have a fan blowing across the unit from the side but it’s not really effective.

Anyone have good idea on ways to get more heat out of it? Looking at the wiring i can’t see a way to just run the right side blower. Girlfriend is not happy at 59F.. lol

Oh crap! sorry to hear! Well try pointing the fan at the stove from the furthest visible spot of the stove in the house. Meaning as you walk away from the stove until it's out of sight. Put the fan on the floor when you do this as the cooler air is pushed towards the stove, warmer air travelling above should replace it. Good luck pal.

IF.... if only you had your location filled in your profile....
Maybe someone would be close with a spare motor... or someone might know of a place close to you where you could pickup a motor.

I guess i don't understand the week time frame either..
In the current age we live in, it is realistic to have most things shipped overnite.

It is a bummer when you can't keep warm inside your house...
A spare motor would be a good idea for something that you have found is so critical for your heating need.

Try ducting the fan with some cardboard and tape to replace removed blower?

Sounds like the cardboard would be a fire hazard on that unit.

Take a look at the page listed above. You should be able to drop one of the fans out of the circuit. It looks like they are running off a common feed.
The other option is to get the info off the motor and try to match it with something from Grainger or Mcmaster carr. Either one should be able to have it in a day if you can match it up.

Where are you, perhaps a member is near and can help.

Keeping a spare will be useful for the future

So today i disconnected one of the fans so i have one back up and running. The spare is on order from hitzer.

It’s amazing how much better the insert heats with even the one fan. House is almost up to 61!!!

Thanks!

You are running at 400? Why don't you try 600?
