I used to poke my 50 93. Now I clean the sides and corners with a shovel. Just push the blade straight down and crunch the stuff against the side working your way toward the hopper. Sometimes I do a second shakedown to get more glow in the ashpan

We're burning (3) 50-93's and we poke about every 3 or 4 days on all of them. I find if I go much longer the ash is building up in my corners and my stove temps drop off about 100 degrees. Every now and then I'll go through and poke through the fire towards the back of the fire box and I feel it helps to free up some of the ash hanging out in the back of the firebox.
