If I get my old Werhle restored and installed it will most likely only be used for a back-up heat source. (That is unless I get the bug...) My questions is, is it safe to store bags of coal in a basement for long periods of time? Is spontaneous combustion a concern?

Found this.

"If fine coal is stored there is some risk of spontaneous combustion of coals other than anthracite."

I predict you will get the bug, its more contagious than this years flu.

There is no danger with spontaneous combustion of the bags of anthracite coal. I'd be more worried about water in the bags leaking out. if they are soaked, and staining the floor. I have bags of nut stored in the outside basement stairway entrance in case i need to use the hand fed during a long power outage.

If you are talking about anthracite coal.....

Try lighting some of it..... :what:

Then see if you have the answer to your question about spontaneous combustion. :)
