Normally, the end January to February is Atlanta's cold season but after the cold snap in December and beginning of January, the temps have been mild. So i thought we had seen all the cold we were going to see. I WAS WRONG! temp is slated to go into the 20s at night and i only have about 5 bags of coal left . My local TSC has no more coal.

Oh no. Hopefully, they continue to carry it and this summer you can take advantage of their early bird special. Which I realize don't help you much right now.

The manager said something about not ordering after January. He has a hard time getting coal because TSC doesnt believe Georgia wants coal, however whenever he can get coal it sells like hotcakes. Not really understanding that logic. I will call corporate office tomorrow.

When they first started selling coal, there have been many posts about TSC HQ not understanding their dealer's supply needs. And some dealers didn't seem there was a need to carry coal. It was rather hit or miss that first year. Seems corporate still hasn't figured it all out.
I know this may be blasphemy, but until you can get more coal, how's that Chubby do with hard wood ?

Vonda,
I have burnt hardwood chunks in the Chubby. The wood coats the mika window, but the 'heat' is there, just needs much shorter tending. After lighting, close the ash door primary, and open the 'doggy ears', at the top of the barrel.
Cheers

Dry hardwood and don't try to burn it as slow as possible.
As mentioned above, give it lots of over fire secondary air to help burn off as much creosote as possible.
And, keep the stack temperature up to at least 250F, so you don't get condensation of any remaining creosote on pipe and chimney walls.

K,
$2.67 for a 40 pound bag ? It was still $6.25 per 40 lb bag last week at the TSC stores here.
In the past TSC gives 10% off. I believe the time to they have that offer to order is in early Fall.

If you sign up at the TSC website (or stores) for their email sales flyers, you should get a notice when the sale starts so that you can get your order in, and what window of time it can be picked up within.
