But we're still not addressing why this user had such a hellish blow up??Thanx WH, I never gutted a heat exchanger & my guy told me just to push in & out, did that every couple weeks. I always returned it to it's original position. This was back in the 70's when I think they were pretty new on the market??? Bein I have no need on the HITZER, I've never researched it much. If I want more heat distribution I just use either the stove blower (rarely) or the ceiling fan that works real well in this broke up old farm house.

Big Barney, could you sketch up a little diagram of how your combustion chamber works? I want to understand the whole down draft technique yours uses. Please?

That's easy. It was the perfect storm of coincidences. Low draft so the baro wasn't diluting the volatiles, buried the fuel bed with fresh coal, no secondary air to dilute the gases once again, his stove and chimney system had opportunity to fill with volatile gases with the precise fuel/air mixture to explode. All it needed was ignition.

yup-with the new harman. definitely working on learning this thing. I think i added too much too fast without roaring it up first properly - or rather too soon. learning what not to do is a lesson in its self.
With the magic heat it seems to work, it kicks on and off with air slide at @ 35%. Air slides been at @ 20% and it hasn't kicked on. But at that rate, I'm going on 28 hours on the fill and box is still a little more than half full. Overall, I'm not sure if its hurting draft - i bought a Manometer but it wont arrive till early next week. Then i can get some readings. If i need to remove it its not a big deal - Ill pop in a 2' section of new black pipe.

Nice S. Enjoy the heating season. You're gonna enjoy the hell out of your coal venture! Remember--KISS!
I'm still tryin to figure what that was exactly??????????????
Just to get a few good ones on video for newbies that want to know exactly what a puff back is and the dangers that they present. You don't wanna have your face down there when that sucker ignites.
