Then get yourself a Baltimore heater, the best of the best. I love mine. Also invest in a Kevlar vest and automatic weapons.

Smart to get out of central NY! I grew up in snowy Syracuse; now live in RI. It’s a tropical paradise here compared to CNY!

I'm actually thinking of moving back to Baltimore. Much easier access to coal. I know I'm crazy!
Fyi i visit Ohio a lot. It would make me as happy as the Dakota's would make me happy. NOT! But Maryland is doable
Theres nothing wrong with the Dakotas... lots of wind and as cold as where I am, but a heck of a lot less people and a lot more sensible laws. ND barely has any property tax in many areas. I doubt you'd get a ticket for burning a tire outside in most areas of the state. SD is one the best states tax wise to retire in. The Black Hills and the Missouri River areas are beautiful too. But if you like being taxed to death and crowded in go ahead and move where your talking about

Its funny how very few people are happy where they live. I like where I live except for the coldest 3 months. I think I'll become a snowbird some day ;) Just a couple states south though.

A friend if mine has one in his fireplace that he isn't using. Such a shame.

I use to live in greenbelt, md. Love it so I'm going back. I only moved to Atlanta to help family.
I'm going to have to disagree on the Dakota thing. I'm city gal. I need people around me.

I imagine your stove likes the colder weather. Have you made progress getting the heat moved throughout the house?

I did read it, but he is not letting it go. Maybe when and if I get to Maryland I can be more persuasive.

Even though he's not using it, he may just like the "look" of an antique stove in an antique house, and/or, want something as backup heat ????

Sometimes the offer of a replacement will get results, where the offer of money failed. If he takes the money, then he has to go find something antique and usable to put there. Fancy antique wood parlor box stoves are quite plentiful, look proportionally good in front of an antique fireplace, and are much easier for a stove novice to use as backup heat.

Maybe offer to swap the Baltimore for something like these ? https://www.bryantstoves.com/parlor-stoves
