Has anybody ever revamped the inside of one of these HOTBLAST 1557m to do away with the slanted sides. I was thinking about Making A reverse L bracket shelf type to go from the sides of the grates straight up then 90 degree to the wall. That way the coal has a more deep and straight up and down coal bed versus the V shape.
Any thoughts or ideas would be helpful. This is going to be a spring time project. Along with trying to install a bigger blower (an actual furnace blower) in place of the 2 smaller once’s. Thanks guys.

Your probably going to lose to much fire box size making it square.
The V shape really isn’t that bad.
Save your money and buy something more purposed for coal.

Hey Mike, the sloped fire bricks aren't the problem. The problem is the huge landing that the grate frames create. Ash piles up on that landing and then continues up the sloped bricks. Doing away with the grates and frames fixes the issue, but then you need a new way to clear ash. Have you seen this thread?
Riddle Method for Ash Clearing
It's an alternative way to clear ash and so far I'm dumbfounded as to how good it's been working.
You have the right idea with going vertical with the bricks but it will sacrifice a HUGE amount of coal.

Ok I gothcha on that. What I did do to eliminate the ash build up down low was add another row of firebrick and seems to work great. My problem is and it’s not really a problem as much as inconvienence is having to scrap the sides on shakedown cause the coal seems to hang up even after shaking. I can see losing a lot of room for coal though. Did you ever look into those other grates that we talked about before, the ones you helped a friend with?

Did that exact thing - didn’t work. These stoves are real touchy on anthracite but with a little patience will work. I guess it’s all in how much you feel like working with it to get the results you want.

Ok Lee I see what you did, you added a whole other grate system and use a bar to clear ash looks like that was made to be in there and the brick fit perfectly.
Did you cut the legs off the grate.

The little two inch legs are bolt on, so I just didn't use them. The width is perfect but as you see in the thread the length is about 7 inches short.
Yeah it's killin me how easy ash clearing is with the inverted saw toothed bar lol. I don't do any pushing around of coal from the topside, no raking, no poking, no flossing underneath, I just saw across the top of the grate one pass, sometimes two passes and the ash pan is full with a strong orange glow underneath. It's crazy.

Ok Lee, that might be something I try in the spring.
Did you look at this one? It says it’s 27” long I wonder if it would fit a little better.- Lightning

I saw that one. Reviews scared me away because some said it broke easy and seemed light weight. It's for a barrel stove and I question its durability. I couldn't get any more specific information about thickness. But yeah that length and width would be just right. The only way to find out is to get one from a place that is easy to return it to and give it a good inspection. It would cost return shipping at least.
The one I found at the hardware store was designed for the US Stove wood furnace and I could get my hands on it. It seemed durable so I grabbed it.

Lee, I reread all your post on riddle method and you always come up good ideas. I’m always on the same page, but you get it done.
You should do another video on ash clearing like you did before with the double shake and heave.
Got some warmer weather coming up for a change. Some say calms before the storm

Hey Mike, thanks for the kind words partner. I'm in the midst of making a couple more alterations but as soon as I get it done I'll shoot a video demonstrating the riddle and slice method, Or should it be called the spear and saw method.
About another week I'll be ready.
