Hand Fed Coal Furnace: Hitzer 82FA
Coal Size/Type: Anthracite NUT

Well we have been having a cold winter in western PA. Just got my dhw coil in day before new years eve. Also fist year for having furnace tied into my ductwork. I must say I'm disappointed. On new years day we hosted 20+ people and it was 76 and so hot I couldn't sleep that night. Every morning since I have woken up to emergency backup heat kicked on with heat pump cycling on/off and everyone under blankets. I'm not that experienced with this thin Hitzer 82FA. I never rake coals but I tried his am. Each day I open up the dial-a-heat one number. Roasted everyone out on new years but cold stove since. Maybe raking will help? I'm confused. Temps about "0" each morning. I moved mag thermometer to feed door. Yesterday early am a little over 240deg, 1:30pm 290, 4:15 340 deg

Been waking up to this everyday, see pic. Hoping to get some ideas from those more experienced.

I'm not a Hitzer owner but that fire looks good but I see a lot of fire brick exposed. Rev that baby up. clear as much ash as you can and fill it to the brim mounding coal in the center. This stove looks to hold 100+ lbs. of coal.
If this stove has a diverter plate, (damper) try it in both settings and see what works for you. I have read this stove is similar in design to a Riteway 37 and the diverter plate gives you the option.
Good luck bud, I'm sure it's an easy fix as you had the stove running well recently.

Coal isn't happy unless there is a lot of it. Once you get it going well load it up to the top of the firebrick. If cold, mound it up. Once you get the hang of it, you'll be grinning. :D

On the air intake, there may be a plate inside of there if it hasnt been removed. Its a requirement from UL or someone else so hitzer has to put them there. It can be removed but thats up to you. And fill it up.

Yes it will easily hold 100 lbs, this is mine up to the top of the fire brick and mounded in the middle. The dial is set at 11 and running a steady 70* in my shop, yeah keep the damper closed after you have a good bed going.

I think it is a combination of being ash bound and not enough coal. Give it a real good shake, and dig out the flue outlet with a poker to make sure it is clear.

Also, there is no such thing as free DHW. Every btu that goes into that coil is not going into the ductwork.

Well thanks everyone! Seems like I have a rhythm now. At least till ill he weather changes. Things are pretty cozy. I don't run a baro, and never touch the manual damper. Any suggestion on when to fuss with it? Or get a baro

FILL IT UP TO THE TOP OF THE FIREBRICK! If the coal is happy, you will be too.

It is almost on the left. :)

Coaled is right, it could probably use another 30#

Heat output w/ coal is never regulated by the amount of coal you put in the fire box.
Heat output is regulated by the amount of air you let through the burning coal bed...fill it to the top of the bricks and mound it up in the middle.

Yes, Fill it up!!!! Once filled, and fire settled in, you may be able to idle it down some, and have the same, if not more heat output.
