Its what i do for a living, I own a metal fab shop. I built a CNC plasma cutter for my shop 2 years ago. Makes things so much easier. Draw the part in a computer program, load it on the table, and let it cut. The CNC will cut 5'x10' up to 1 inch thick material.

That is really neat man! I was gonna ask if you could use half inch material on the grate piece I'm looking for, sounds like that's not a problem
What does CNC stand for?

1/2" is no problem at all. CNC stands for computer numeric control. When the drawing gets put in the computer program it gets converted to what is called G code. This plots out all the coordinates for the machine to follow. The coordinates are number measurements on the 3 axis that the machine runs.
Thank you Joeq, I felt it was the least i could do. When i started burning coal and found this forum I followed lightning's threads since I have a furnace similar in design. Without his detailed information I wouldn't have half the knowledge I do now.

Wow
I would need the junior version of that for my insert. That would be 25in. long from handle to tip. To fit through the grate access opening on my insert it could only be 1/2in. wide. The metal thickness would be best at 3/16in.
Don't know if that would be doable for you.

Another note worthy first today. Recovery after ash clearing and reload was so fast that I only got halfway thru my dinner plate. I take dinner seriously and don't waste any time on it. Oh, and the stove didn't even cool long enough for the convection blowers to toggle off.
To be fair and honest, last night I noticed the orange glow radiating down thru after ash clearing wasn't quite as prominent as the days before. So, I did do a little topside work on the fuel bed along with a second riddle, of which restored a healthier glow. It was only a few minutes extra work.
According to UPS tracking the new and improved Death Bar will be here tomorrow, I'm excited

Hi All
Just received my riddle tool from Chris of CD industries. He made it to my specs and the workmanship is first rate. Previously I had been using a repurposed poker. This tool cuts through ash like butter. It does a much better job of ash removal then shaking alone. A weak point of the Hitzer insert is the grate shaker design. It uses a slip on handle that fits over a nub on the end of each grate. Over time the friction at the interface zone wares down the grate nub end and wallows out the handle. This weakens the grate nub and over time leads to it snapping off. It also results in handle slop making shake downs more difficult. With the riddle technique you get great ash clearance with less ware and tear on the grates and handle. I also use all purpose grease twice a week on the handle to cut down on frictional wear. This combined with the riddle technique really cuts down on grate nub and handle ware.
I riddle then just give each grate a small shake to settle the coal before adding new coal to the hopper. I think anyone with a Hitzer 503/983 insert or stove with a similar handle type system will find that this method gives easier, cleaner and more effective clean outs then shaking alone. The riddle tool made my Chris is top notch. He is willing to make custom tools of all sorts for our unique coal tending needs.
