Paul made an important point in pointing out that some manufacturers don't have a clue when it comes to coal burning, or even wood burning.
We tend to think the maker knows best and to assume he made the thing right. most stoves made today could stand improvement in one way or another.

The furnace is still responding well to the flat grate. No problems encountered so far, ash is clearing like slicing warm butter, well almost haha.
I have a difficult time leaving well enough alone, and am considering a minor alteration. At some point I think I'll replace the two bars at the front of the fuel bed. I'll have to buy another flat grate and cut it to fit, it only needs about 6 inches worth. Maybe. Also, I probably should have put a spacer between the bar and grate in the back, just to be thorough.
I'll run it this way for a while and maybe I'll save that for later.

What do you think of a design like this for a riddle bar? It could be cut from one piece of steel 3/16" or 1/4" thick.
