when shaking, I typically shake till I get a bunch of orange glowing embers in the ash pan and then I run the poker through all the slots in the grate till I see orange in everyone of them.
then I load up and let it go. I rarely have to do anything with the stove under 12 hrs. of burn time.
if for some reason my fire goes out and I have good coal in there I will build the fire on top also , started with paper & kindling and maybe a very small log and then when it's rolling top off with coal and let it go.
where have all the Chubbies gone?
