Need some Hitzer 50-93 guidance please

Now that ive read the whole thread I feel dumb for recommending the poker from underneath. But let me just say that I'm my 3 winters of coal I've found the when running the hopper full for weeks on end the only way to remove the ash completely from the corners and rear grate it to poke and grind clinker from the bottom. I take pride in how evenly it glows

Hey man, there are many ways to get to the same destination. If poking up thru the bottom shows good results then have at it! I do a similar thing with a slicing tool I made to "floss" between the grates and grate frames. I do what I feel I need to do to get 24 hour burns in 25-30 degree weather.

Stoves are different Lee, no-one I know with a 50-93 even goes for that 24 hr burn. Tried & true 12 hr tending has worked for years. Plus empting ash pan every 12 hrs. (VERY IMPORTANT) I have never poked from the bottom--no need--I do clear the outside edges on occasion as I've stated many times. I also never need to get her roaring before tending, my bi-metallic takes care of all that. If ya notice, I don't give advice to people other then the 30-95 & 50-93 or an ocassional hand fired cause I've never used anything else except a couple BB's burning wood. I do get a chuckle reading about all the strange things people do to their stoves.

Fred, my father in law runs two saey Hannover 2 stoves, one in house and one in garage, bi metallic hopper fed, he runs 24 hours between tends, sometimes pushes it to 36 hours, no issues

Well, i have only burnt coal in 1 hand fed stove... my Crane 404 ..

The only time i find any benefit from ignoring my stove for 24 hrs is when i don't want heat .

HB, I've comfortably had my 50-93 go for 54 hrs when I was away for the week-end + some. That's not the point I was trying to make. I said the 12 hr tending schedule was tried & true for normal usage in COLD weather. Real good practice for the beginning coal burner to get into--after that--who cares, explore away

Fred, I only commented to help the guy out that felt "dumb" for recommending something that worked for him for 3 years. I don't know if he wants a 12 hour burn or a 24 hour burn, it doesn't really matter to me lol.

FF, is that just because of the bi-mettalic ? OR, does the hopper help avoid the need for the roar ?

Both play a good part WH. I'm thinkin mostly the bi-metallic cause when I shaKe a lot of fresh coal comes down. AND, I'm talkin dry coal not this wet stuff that people have unfortunately been runnin into.

I don't get my stove roaring most times,but mine is not my only heat source. I shake the ashes out & fill the fire pot,close & walk away. My air exchanger will pull heat from my coal boiler to keep the house temp even.

BUT, my Crane is not capable of heating my entire house like your Hitzer is either.

Yep, but that 404 heats exactly what you want it to.

To many people undersize their stoves & think being creative is gonna make them a HEATIN monster-- kinda like putting trips & header on a six cylinder--yes, she'll be real quick, but she's still a six cylinder & would do poorly against a 8 banger.

The hopper plays the biggest part in not needing to ramp the fire up because the coal is entering the fire at usually several hundred degrees, instead of hand feeding it coal at room temperature.

In the cuff mos. I've kept the hopper empty & just loaded fresh through the hopper door with the same results.

It is not recommended to leave a hopper in empty while firing, without the coal In it, it can warp it from getting too hot, especially with cast iron.
