Hi guys anyone out there have a DS stove that they burn wood in much ? I have a DS Anthramax 15 model and i have had a few wood fires in it but seems like I cant seem to get it down to a system. When the temps fall down further then i will throw the coal to it and let it rip just looking to burn wood for now.
Do you use the stove thermostat ? or use a MPD ? Just curious on how everyone does it?

I burn wood in a ComfortMax, which was listed as a wood/coal stove when I bought it, but is now listed only as a coal stove. I use a combination of the bimetallic/thermostat air inlet and over the fire air. Works just fine. Even better now for extended long burns since I lengthened the chain on the bimetallic air inlet flapper.

Isayre- do you put the plate over the grates while wood burning that is supplied? So what was your reason for adding length to the chain on the bimetalic damper? Right now i covered the all the grates except just the edges to see if that helps. My main problem is that it seem like it burns to fast even with bimetalic damper closed and primary air closed almost all the way.

I did put the plate in, but it only partially covers the grates.John27elec wrote: ↑Sat. Nov. 25, 2017 2:59 pmIsayre- do you put the plate over the grates while wood burning that is supplied? Check all your gasket, perform the dollar bill test, when shutting a dollar bill in the doors, you shouldn’t be able to pull it out.John27elec wrote: ↑Sat. You should be able to just about smother out a wood fire.

Thanks, i did perform the dollar bill test on the doors and i even went to the extreme of tin foiling the ash door because it seemed that the fire was getting air right where the hole is in the plate that covers the grates. Which made no difference makes no sense to where the air is coming from. Only thing i was thinking that its pulling it from the bimetalic damper which was closed but obviously not gasketed.

No chance with the new government mandated 'EPA' stoves. They burn hotter and faster by design. Gotta keep the air clean.hotblast1357 wrote: ↑Sat. Nov. 25, 2017 4:21 pmYou should be able to just about smother out a wood fire.

Then there are secondary burn tubes that have un-restricted air going to them, usually underneath somewhere. U can close them off, but then you loose the efficiency.

Exactly i have tried closing them off some, with a couple magnets not closing the whole way just slightly. Didn't seem to change it much. I watched a video online youtube a guy talking about an energy max 160 saying that he had to just about cover the grates and get about 3 inches of ash on the plate to get the burn times longer. In the comments i read that he is even closing the pipe damper some too a suggestion from Messicks stoves.

The legal consequences of that could be as devastating as removing a mattress tag.hotblast1357 wrote: ↑Sat. Nov. 25, 2017 5:04 pmThen there are secondary burn tubes that have un-restricted air going to them, usually underneath somewhere. U can close them off, but then you loose the efficiency.

Thanks, that's my next attempt tomorrow is to close of the damper 3/4 way and see what happens. My test tonight covering almost all of the grates did not work still burned to fast and way to hot.
This DS keeps it up it will headed to the garage and the Hitzer 50-93 will be put back in the house, could always burn wood in it just not keep the window clean but not a huge deal.
