that's my next attempt tomorrow is to close of the damper 3/4 way and see what happens
Don't be afraid to close it completely if 3/4 doesn't do the trick. Even when closed, there is some space for flue gases to get thru. Also, all MPDs that I've seen have some vents thru the center of them which makes it impossible to choke the pipe completely. You should be able to throttle that stove quite well with the MPD. If smoke starts rolling out of the stove, open the MPD a hair.

I'm up to about 6 hours between wood feedings for the ComfortMax now, vs. about 4.5 hours before I lengthened the chain. And I can hold the stove at up to 200 degrees cooler as measured by my gauge which sits near the top of the stove directly above the center of the window endowed loading door (there being no hopper door on the ComfortMax). Since the AnthraMax seems so similar overall, it leads me to speculate that there is something being missed here if you can't tweak it to get extended burn times.

Pipe damper is doing the trick so far this morning time will tell, Coal burning no harps with the stove its a very nice attractive stove to have in the house. Back in my days of wood burning I never had to a MPD just not sure why this one requires it. Keep playing with it and see what happens.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions appreciate the feedback.

It’s needed because the government has made the design of these new wood stoves to not be able to be choked down for long slow burns, which as you know just kills the environment lol

They are made to burn hot and quick, by not being able to completely shut off the air to the fire.

It is apparently illegal to install an MPD on an 'EPA' wood stove. My installer (the place I bought the stove from) refused to install one, telling me they were not permitted to do so. If you ever have trouble that requires the assistance of your insurance company at any juncture, they may deny you such assistance if they find an MPD on your 'EPA' stove.
