I reburnished 3 or 4 Hitzer recently, every 5 years or so, you should remove the 2 metal screws of the thermostat box. Lubricate the spring, the roller and all moving parts with WD40, turn the the botton left and right 10 to 15 times or until it runs freely, then apply light oil (sewing machine type) on moving parts. Your control will work like new for years.

The easyest way I found to adjust it, is open the flapper half way to full open, then attatch the chain to the hook. Make sure that the flapper close completely when you turn the knob completely to the right.

What he said. A cold stove should have the thermostat holding the door open about horizontally. That’s your starting point. When you light the stove it will stay open until it satisfies that setting.
Above freezing my front door vents are closed. This morning it’s 14, and they’re set at a small circle, back door closing around 500. Throwing heat like a champ.
