Starting a fire in an Oak Stove with No Mica Windows

Guys with the antique stoves with no windows how do you start your fire .I have a Hitzer ab Gibraltar with Big glass doors .Looked at a Oak with 13 inch firepot an 16 inch diameter.Not a dumb question been using coal over 25 years .So if you can not see bottom of firepot how do you start the stove .Match lite charcoal stinks like heck .jack Your comments please .
