I have the Hitzer 82FA and a large house, 2880sqft (built 2008) with cathedral ceilings and a full unfinished walk out basement.

On single digit temperature days, I'd like MORE heat. Wifey likes it a min of 74F upstairs. Last year when it was 3F outside, the Hitzer at melt your face off full blast could only keep it at 72F.

I love how the Hitzer operates, I want to stay with hand fired with a blower.

Who makes a larger capacity hand fired unit? Also keeping high quality?

Thanks in advance.

Is the Hitzer in the basement? Is there ductwork installed to get the heat upstairs?

Yes, Hitzer is in basement and ducted to cold air return from output, input is just from the add on blower box.

If you add it as a second stove...
The 82fa is 110k btu...
The 50-93 is 100k btu... ;)
A fireplace insert may do the trick...
for the extra 2* needed...

That's a great idea, to add another stove if you have a convenient place for it. There have been times with overnights well below zero, that I'll fire up the wood pellet stove just to supplement instead of running the coal furnace so hard.

You could also run it in shoulder months.

Eell, i do have a upstairs double sided fireplace, that if i could find a good hand fired stove for it.... I would consider.

Back to the original question, who makes a hand-fired furnance over 110,000btu?

DS Machine (among others).

Be aware though that 110,000 BTUH input requires the burning of 216 lbs. of anthracite within 24 hours. 9 lbs. per hour. That's a lot of coal. For two tendings per day it would require a firebox capable of holding about 165 lbs. of anthracite by my guesstimate. And if you are looking for 110,000 lbs. of output, multiply everything by about 1.333.

http://hitzer.com/our-products/stoves-furnaces/mo ... er-furnace

Hitzer 710 -- up to 150K BTU

My 503 says "up to 3000 sqft"...right. I supplement w/electric on cold cold days (2% of time?).

Another option for ya....just suppl. until 82 goes ka-poot, then replace with higher BTU model

1.5 x Required BTUH Input/1000 = Minimum firebox capacity in Lbs. of anthracite

2 x Required BTUH Output/1000 = Minimum firebox capacity in Lbs. of anthracite

Two new rules of thumb?

DS Machine makes a few models...

http://www.messickstove.com/products/ds-machine-s ... index.html

This is the current model of what I used in my former house...
no insulation, very drafty, windows rattled with a strong wind...
No blower but you would put a collector hood above to move the heat...
Or do what I had a large grate above the stove...
Gotta get it setup in the new house...

Of course if you rearrange these equations you can determine the nominal BTUH rating of your existing stove as follows:

Firebox capacity in lbs. of anthracite x 1000 / 1.5 = actual maximum BTUH Input for 12 hour tending

Firebox capacity in lbs. of anthracite x 1000 / 2 = actual maximum BTUH Output for 12 hour tending
