On my old Woods and Bishop #4 New Era pot bellied stove, just above the ash door there is a much smaller door with "anti-clinker" cast on the tiny door. When you open it up, a finger type mechanism is present.
What is this and how does it work. I have seen plenty of pot bellied stoves, but none with this feature on it. No one I talked too knows what it does.

Lots of old stoves and boilers had a clinker door. It is just a means to access the area at grate lever to slide a poker in there to break up anything resistant to ordinary shaking.

Alright challenge accepted, though Katie could not find her Little Black Chimney Sweep Outfit so you are all going to have to be okay with her as Little Red Ridinghood. I also had to get kind of creative on how to incorporate the anti-clinker into the photo. Contrary to popular belief, Little Red Ridinghood and coal ash are kind of diametrically opposed in terms of color, texture and good versus evil. As I said, it was a challenge and I hope you're not disappointed. Kind of a funny story on that photo. It was a spur of the moment picture and I caught Katie kind of off guard. Well I don't wear skirts so I don't think of viewing angles like Katie does, so at the last second she moved the flowers in her hand which is why she had that smirk and look to her face.

not sure i can type just now, seems there's a blue dot every where i look like when you suddenly come inside from being out in serious direct light for hrs.
so, can anyone tell me how that plunger bar thing functions as an "anti clinker " ? does it fit into a like size frame in the fire pot where you can get your pokers just below the heart of the fire ? if so it's kind of cool as others who have draw center grates know it would be neat to do all the super ash clearing below the "bridge" from there rather than standing on your head

Yeah it was hard for me to get a close up of the anti-clinker and a picture of Katie too. I was just messing around because of what KingCoal was saying, but do thank you for your kind words regarding my wife. She is fun as there is not a lot of women that would willing get dressed up for some guys on a coal forum, but she was up for it. When we go out on dates, we are typically the best dressed people in the restaurant; not really a challenge in frumpy-dressed people of Maine, but they are always surprised when they find out we are farmers. I would be lying if I said she was a professional model, but she has done a few modeling sessions for money.freetown fred wrote:Damn, I was lookin for the whole stove, you're right though--Katie is definitely a looker!! As for the anti-clinker, I am not sure how it works either. IF the shaker churned 360 degrees I could see where it might grind clinkers on the outside of the stove down, but it doesn't, and I can see where it might serve as a pusher of sorts to shove the ashes away from the dump grate as it is pulled outward, but that would hardly be an anti-clinker...more of a 'don't-make-a-mess-on-the-floor" mechanism. However, maybe casting all those letters into a teeny-tiny door was too much with 1893 technology?
