This will be my 3rd year with coal and my Hitzer 50 93. I just did a through cleaning of the stove this afternoon and got me wondering about preventative maintenance.
Do you change your glass on a regular schedule or wait until it breaks ? Mine is not very clear anymore, even though it is clean. I noticed one corner where it actually has a bit of a rough, slightly sandy, feel on the inner surface.
Do you replace any of the seals on a regular basis and if so at what intervals ?
Any place online that has these items for a good price ?

Mine is 8 yrs. old OD. Yep, some coarse spots but I can still get the idea that my fire is goin!! LOL Any HITZER dealer should have them--prices shouldn't vary much. It's personal preference my friend.

The glass/ceramic will become etched. Crazing leads to breaking. Having a spare is not a bad idea. I do not rmember anyone having true blow outs like i have heard of on wood stoves. Be prepared to minimize downtime, by stocking parts that make sense.

Personally, Yes, I do like seeing the coals glowing away, casting a glow throughout. I like seeing how healthy the fire is.
Keeping a spare glass around is not a bad thing. So, pretty much, like others have said.

Most get changed because you can't see through them, not because they crack. A spare on the shelf is a great idea. And gaskets if it takes them.

If you enjoy looking at the fire, change it. If you dont care, leave it. Im in the change it category but right now I dont have a glass to change (which makes me miss it more)
Coal fires are as pretty as a wood fire and sometimes even more so. (Im being serious here)
Ive heard that more people that have new coal stove glass are in relationships, but thats just a rumor its the dancing blue ladies that will put them in a trance.... You CANT see those with damaged glass! (joking here, maybe)

After 8 seasons with my Hitzer 503, I replaced the pitted glass and rope seals on the stove.
The seal looks like it was allowing air in due to "burn marks" (like 1-2 " brown section on glass in 2 places). Sure it would not have been a major safety issue.

Speaking of broken glass; I noticed yesterday, my glass in the DS is cracked. I won't change it unless it starts to fall out. Especially seeing I'd like to change out the whole stove, but have other irons in the fire. We'll see........
