Does anybody have any input on the above insert. It is hand fired and has no blower. The owner says it puts out a ton of heat. Would it be enough for an open living room/kitchen area?

Having fans is mandatory for any insert, or tons more of heat is lost.
Best heat, fans or no fans is had outside the fireplace.

Look at ways to still use it's flue if space in front is enough to accomodate.

My Hitzer 503 ? With fans=tons of heat ........ w/o them running, about 33% (guess)

McGiever,

The opening on top of the insert is 5"x7" rectangle but doesn't appear that a collar will work... Everything I have seen online, and especially here, points to these stoves/inserts as being top of the line and absolute heat beasts. I want to put an insert in my fireplace but know nothing about heating with coal other than what I have read online and here. I just need to find a place to get parts for it as I know that it is missing the blowers.

Here is what has been discussed earlier, found in the archives>>>>>> Gibraltar Cfi Need Help With Blowers

As for having all the parts, the "2 banking plates" are a must have for burning coal...useless w/o them.
