Well, did you have a nice Christmas? Does anybody have any drawings or plans to make a coal hod or scuttle that will hold about 40 pounds of anthracite nu?. Shovel after shovel after shovel is getting old.

No need to home make a scuttle unless you're into that. Just bought one at my local Agway. $26.79 and it is galvanized to resist corrosion.

If 40 pounds is your goal, keep in mind that the #16-17 size, which are the typical antique coal buckets, only hold about 30-32 pounds of nut coal. The modern ones sold in stove shops, hardware stores, and Lowes as wood stove "ash buckets" are a bit smaller.

You can make one out of a bucket. Just zip screw a piece of tin inside the bucket like this. I used an oversized bucket. It'll hold 55 pounds easy.

Thanks I'll check my local agway. If they don't have one I guess I'll go lee's route.

Neat invention Lee, but I would've expected nothing less.
On a similar complaint, where can I find a larger shovel than the ones supplied with the standard hods? Trying to scoop up any kind of stove size coal, can be overly frustrating.

I get the impression that he's looking to get away from having to move smaller amounts of coal and wanting to scale up to moving more in one shot to save all that extra work ?

Because the 30 year old bags the coal I was given are disintegrating I am left shoveling the stove coal into buckets for transport into the house. My HD had what they call a "transfer" shovel. It works like a dream. I don't know why it works better then the garden shovel I was using but I wish I'd found it earlier. Lisajoeq wrote:Neat invention Lee, but I would've expected nothing less.

I currently use a coal shovel, but it's just a pain in the butt making five trips or so to the coal bin. So I would like something to hold at least a bag of coal.
