Been running my Chubby on and off this late fall as its been in low 20's a few nights and below freezing many nights. I have re starts down to 10 min flat now. But I have already gone twice with a 23-24 hour burn . It was in 40's during day, but it went the distance before a shake and scrape and refill. The refill is tricky as fire is small, but still, I am STILL amazed by this Wonder. Burning Blashak Nut, but will mix in Stove size coal when its super cold out and I have the draft open more .

Hey Bruski, think you may be happy to stick with nut. Love my Chubby. Been doing the yo yo too, letting mine run down to weak coals a few times. Back to business by layering on kindling followed by a light layer of coal then shake. Alternately layer with matchlite. Larry does not like it but I see no problem if it is attended and well vented, i.e. open loading door and MPD. Got to LOVE the Chubby!!!

PS I would not burn matchlite with loading door closed. And I would limit the amount to one scoop max. It is all that is needed.

PPS my technique is put on thin layer of alt fuel. When glowing add thin layer of coal. When coal catches floss from below aggressively to drop embers lower in cold bed. Let it catch and then shake hard. Fill up with coal. Do another shake after a few hours to remove the last of the ash buildup. Much easier then emptying the fire pot.

Guess I should put my restart habit on here.
Shake down, scrape out ( once cold) , empty the pan..
Reach in with glove and move all unburnt coal to front of stove in a slope
Open clean grate shows in rear ( right below my Flue exit which is on top my Chubby)
15 pieces of matchlight, or regular charcoal with a little kero on top.
Light it up, open drafts and damper. 3 min put in some coal fines off bottom of Shod. 1 min later some nut coal, 8 minutes its ready for more coal
clamp it down 10 minutes and let it go

This is what Larry taught me, to suck it up and put on the gloves. It works, but try it my way next time and see of it is easier for you.

What is "Alt Fuel" ???
I do not empty the fire pot at all, just pull the coal to front exposing the grates in rear , so air can get to my new charcoal, and fines and Nut coal
