Smoke curtain or not? I was thinking of leaving it out or cutting it down. It gets in the way and wakes the family up in the mornings. Any ideas or thoughts?

Rip it out! I always hated the thing, your not burning wood so no smoke to come out! You might get a little more sulfur smell in the house.. I had a strong Steady draft so was never an issue.

And if you open the dampers for a minute, or two, to get a strong draft going and then close the primary damper down to idle setting before adding fresh coal, your less likely to even get any sulfur smell.
I have to load coal directly in over the top of the firebox, and the top of the firebed is only about three inches below the stove top when I do that. By doing both those things I mentioned before opening the stove top, that prevents any whiff of burning coal smell.
