Hand Fed Coal Stove: researching now

Post by jsplott » Thu. Jul. 21, 2016 10:08 pm

I found what I think to be a nice solid 617a that a co-worker had buried in his garage as well as 2nd one for parts. Price was very good. I didn't know how coal stoves were so addictive. May even look at an 818 this weekend. I just bought a 400a a few months ago after getting input from this forum. Already have over 2 tons of coal piled up ready to start the fall on the right foot.

There is a 2nd one that looks worse but the bricks and grate are perfect.

Does anyone know the coal capacity of the 617s? How are they rated for heating? (How much square feet were they claimed to heat?) I need to find the oval to round pipe adaptor or have one made before fall comes. What is the best way to redo the finish on the stove? Just use stove polish or is there a special paint that works well?

Thanks
Shannon

It holds 60 pounds so should be good for about 12 to 1500 square feet.

To fit the smoke pipe just squeeze
the standard pipe to an oval and it will fit.

The outlet can be reversed, horizontal to vertical, if wanted.

Thanks very much. I need to clean up the exterior of the stove since it's showing some rust in a few places. The previous owner had painted it with rustoleum stove black but I was wondering if I should sand it all off and repaint with thermolux or polish it with a good paste? Which is best?

I will try to squeeze the pipe like you suggested.

William's stove polish is good and can go right over the paint. Get a round brush used for shoe polish which works well.

If you decide to repaint do something to make it two tone for best look. The cast top and doors one tone and the barrel another.

The original was gloss black on the cast parts and just wax coated silvery steel on the barrel, which looked nice, but easily rusted once the wax burned off.
