Did a planned shut down yesterday as not going to get cold until tonight. Sifted through the coal bed left unburned and either clinkers or shale or both. I was getting real fine ash and clearing fairly easy so just don't get it. Does their coal have a bunch of shale in it or just clinkers missed? I did poke down from the top cleared grates from the bottom and shook well. It is all very light in weight but noticed all the bags have rust looking stains on them so iron in the coal? If not that what? It burns well great blues easy to control at at a loss for what I am looking at here. I am terrible with pictures but gray and red and very light so thinking clinker. Any ideas as burning slower just not possible as was running around 175 to 300 depending on weather. less than that just not useful.

I've never had any problems with Blashak in the past . I don't usually see shale and clinkers in the bagged stuff . But it's constantly being mined so maybe a poorly sifted batch went through.

Clinkers are formed in the firebox at high temps, it doesn't have much to do with the raw coal.

Nothing bad like that in 6 seasons doing Blaschak BULK--nut/stove mix. Ditto on what CS said

Want to examine if the black stuff is shale or coal, take a torch to it to see if it burns.

I've found some potato chip shaped objects in my ash after using a few bags of the black shack coal. Just a few, doesn't seem to be a problem. I suppose they could become a problem if they accumulate in the fuel bed though.

The fact that I have never noticed this in my ashes means that I am not studying my ashes thorough enough ??? I thought the coal did its thing inside the stove which did its thing until the grates do their thing & all I need to do is to dump the ash pan. I gotta do more ??
