Hand Fed Coal Boiler: Chappee

Hello everyone! I recently purchased a new 30-95 and fired it for the first time today. I noticed that I can see into the ash pan area from where the shaker handle comes out. Is this normal? Thanks!

Take a 15/16 (I think) flat washer & slip it over that nub--might have to file it some to fit--attach to stove body w/ hi-temp silicone or JB Weld--if you don't block it w/ something you'll always have a hot spot there in the fire box.

You need a washer with a 1" hole and you will need to file the hole square to just slip over the grate nub, slide it up against the stove then slide the handle up against the washer and tighten the handle with two set screws which you need to put in the handle. Gluing the washer isn't going to do much good beings as the washer rotates with the grate. :D

WOW!, A square shaft, through a round hole. Seems to me that my grate came through round, then went square. I'll have to look tomorrow morning. I too did the washer trick. I remember thinking it was petty, but did it anyways. A round shaft through a round hole would make it petty. Forgot to look. I'll try again tomorrow.

Another option is to cut a couple "gaskets" out of 1/8" insulation mat. The space between the shaker handle mount & the stove body on my 3 year old 50-93 is small enough that the handle mount holds them tight to the stove.

Hello Members. I finally remembered to look at my 30-95 grate shaft tonight. Yes, it is a round shaft, coming through a round hole. The very end is square for shaker handle. No wonder I thought the opening around the grate shaft was petty. I took a picture, and sent it to my computer. When it gets here, I'll post it. Last time I sent pictures to the computer, they showed up 2 or 3 hours later. Now I'm curious about my 50-93 grate shaft. I'll check next time I'm down to the old home stead.

My 50-93 is round thru the stove body -- last inch or so is square for handle to slip on.

You just saved me a trip Fred. I'll assume my 50-93 is the same, and not a square shaft through a round hole. Otherwise, I know I would have done something about it. :)
