Only So-So. Not fantastic. The glass gets dirty, but the crud does tend to stabilize at a certain level. I've learned to leave it alone.

A question for those in the know:
I'm routinely seeing 475-550 degrees on the top of the ComfortMax on wood, and I'm overheating my zone that it resides in by about 5-6 degrees. Would coal reduce the stove temperature to where I might be able to hold the zone to a more reasonable temperature?

My DS Basement #4 would go down to touchable while on idle...
Stay there as long as i wanted...
So yes coal much more controllable...
Ya got some pea coal give it a try...
Pea tends to bridge when over-fired...
