Hard sayin, I guess you would have to push it till the grates warped.. If you need to run it that hard, its too small for the space your trying to heat.

You burning anthracite? Where was 700 degrees? Flue pipe? You leave the ash pan door open?

Anthracite yes. Right above the door the thermometer is. Didn't look at the temp on the flue pipe. And yes the ash door was open

How did you cool it down?

It's probably ok although I wouldn't recommend running it that hot. I've had 540 degrees over the load door when some bituminous coal went nuclear on me. Later I discovered the rear fire box liner burned thru.

Hopefully you didn't warp anything. It's recommended to stand by the appliance if you have the ash door open unless you have something to warn you that it's getting hot.

Yes the fresh load of cold coal will soak up some heat before it ignites.. Don't run off with the ash pan door open.. :D

Depends on the weather. Yesterday, high of 14 degrees outside I averaged about 310 degrees over the load door with 190 degrees on top the flue pipe about 18 inches out from the furnace.

Can you post a picture? That is a pretty weak reading. Where are you taking the reading? On the pipe? Should keep a minimum of -.02 or better. I run mine -.03. Do you have a manual pipe damper or barometric damper installed?
