The Charter Oak is an enameled finish, the only paint is silver on the back panel and around the door frame. I believe the fire pot was silver painted at one time - now it is rust color.

Why do you ask? are you refurbishing one? If so I can send detailed photos.

John, no I don't rebuild one, the thing is that : we Québecois are always asking questions so one of these days WE will know as much as our USA friends :) :D
but you are always welcome to send photos on the forum, in fact the reason I asked for the enameled is because not many antique stoves are.
Thanks for sharing.

Hi Franco:

Thanks for the complement on the restoration. Your correct the Locke120 holds 100 pounds at a load. I doubt the Charter Oak can hold much more than 20 pound per fill.

I'm finding with the Locke I can idle this stove between 175 and 200 degrees and keep my 750 sq. feet downstairs a comfortable 69 to 72 degrees.

Outside temps have been mid teens day time and lows of 7 degrees at night, lot of wind this week gusting to 29. Average daily coal consumption has been 33 pounds per day Anthracite nut coal.

I know it's a simple stove, however anything this warm when it's that cold outside becomes quite charming.

hear is my Vale Oak #315 made by Buck Walters stove company in PA. it came in my cabin I purchased in the catskills, I had it restored 2 years ago by the Good Time Stove company, the stove was complete with all handles and lid lifter, it runs great both wood and coal, I am just now trying to learn to burn coal correctly and make it last 3 days without relight.
does anyone know where to get old owners manuals or any documents from back then advertisements etc.

I'm a gal that runs a petit Godin which is simplicity itself compared to the fireplaces and cookstove I also tend. Would anyone know where to get a replacement handle for the Godin?

My workhorse is a 1925ish Qualified range company model 1818... When it gets into the low 20s for extended periods she is assisted by the splendid universal 166 base burner circa 1895. .

Do a search for Godin. Someone just recently found parts or pieces for there Godin.

That might be something you'll find on ebay if you keep an eye out for it. In the mean time why not try fabricating something yourself?

Very neat to see the old stoves. I don't even want to post my new fangled Hitzer 50-93 I feel like I would ruin this form. Although I do love my hitzer.
