Been burning wood the last several days off and on. Watching what the smoke in the stove, chimney and where different winds have taken it....
All looks good, but I probably should not see daylight around the flue that goes through the thimble to the outside chimney!!
However, the thing on top didn't seem to be blocking much draft....

As far as insulation around that metal flue. are we talking about the "regular" pink batt type insulation? is that fire proof? (of course without the paper on it) Or, is there something else to get?

I just threw some coal in there today with the intentions to let it burn out for tomorrow's 50+ degree weather. I'll work on it then.

Is three anyone around the plymouth area that could spare a manometer for a couple days? No worries if not, I'm going to order one, ust figured I'd check while working on the current draft issues :D

Yes just regular pink fiberglass. Pack it reasonably tight between the pipe and chimney thimble.

I recommend the Dwyer Mark 2 model 25.. cheap, reliable, easy... you might find one on eBay for around $25. :D

Thanks for your thoughts! And I may do that since I just recovered from my second back surgery! Note to all... as an adult, a Bounce House is no place for us! Kids make it look like so much fun!!! I am not landing anymore back flips anytime soon!!!!! :surrender:

I have a friend that is a great mason, so I may be calling on him and My friend Sam Adams!!

By the way, if there is anyone ever looking for a Mason in the and around the south shore and cape (MA), let me know! I can send his info!!

House has been a comfy 70° since 4pm yesterday when filled my chubby (thanks freetown, I now cant say it with a straight face!).

I think that the thimble was the biggest concern. I stuffed some insulation in there. However, that chimney cap does have some impedance on the draft allowing it to go anywhere but straight up and side to side...only font to back.

I only had it half filled from about 11 last night but now at almost 8am there is still a good enough glow in there that I should be able to bring it back to life.

Good start M....
Fill it all the way up with coal and limit the air through the coal bed to control the heat. You'll get a nice long burn giving very steady heat output and it'll allow you to develop a twice a day schedule for filling and shaking.

Still burnin'!

So I've still got her going and am hoping I can get it down to a schedule! I am having some trouble getting the proper shake down and refill happening without some work. Here is what I have been doing, or attempting...

* Opening up the door in attempt to get a strong burn going - Not really effective the last couple times as it seems the ash is just clogging up the airways way too much to get a decent pull through there. The last time, I got a little kindling fire going on top to hopefully build the draft up and get it hot enough...
* I'm shaking it down just until some of the bigger, glowing ash pieces are falling (pebble size) then throwing a shovel of coal on top, 5 minutes, then another, then a bit more, more, etc till full.

It just seems that once I have shaken it down, I am not getting enough heat to burn the new layers resulting in the awesome sulfur smell. so, I then crank it up again, but by the time I think I have gotten it where I need it to dial her in, I am thinking I may have burned a little too much causing a vicious cycle....

I've tried shaking down sooner and later but can't get the feel for it quite yet....

Trying my best to be consistent, but I feel like I am consistently working at it harder than I would expect to keep it going between fills. That being said, I'm not complaining. My propane furnace has not kicked in for two days!

I'm keeping an eye on it throughout the day. What I thought was the proper setting on the door damper ran a little to hot today than yesterday. but then again, it was 25* warmer today. every 6-8 hours for a "cycle" but I know I can get more out of it than that. I'm just afraid of losing it if I wait to long. I suppose if I am shaking it down too soon, that top layer is not hot enough once it becomes the bottom ember layer needed to heat the newly added level?
