EPA to Make Coal Ash Hazardious Waste

Modern and vintage hand fired coal stove are similar to a wood stove and in some cases can burn either. They need to be regulated and fed by hand usually every 12 to 24 hours depending on your usage. They require no power to operate making them ideal for rural settings with long power outages.

i agree, and I wouldn't be the least surprised if alot of such by product didn't start getting "salted" in / onto very public and politically damning places. :P

Commercial ash stockpiles, NOT our ash production. Just relax, cooler heads will prevail. Hug your bunny tonight, and get some fresh lettuce in the AM. All is good.

Aren't they making the new light weight drywall out of coal ash?

I'll be damned if that isn't what I heard. If it gets reclassified as hazmat...that should be interesting.

Guys get a grip. It's FLY ASH, FLY ASH not bottom ash. How much FLY ASH does your residential coal appliance produce in a year? A small bucket full? A small canister vacuum full? Even if it's declared hazardous waste such a small amount would likely not be regulated. The huge quantities of power plant FLY ASH should be regulated and safely stored or made inert. Again it's not BOTTOM ASH!

I might have guessed it a perverted bunny hugger  . I think all bunny huggers should be registered and not allowed within 1000 yds of schools. I expect an EO as soon as he hangs up the phone castigating the President of Uganda on his gay stance. You see WN these liberal environmental idiots will sue the EPA (yet again), get awarded the case costs and dream up the next stupid thing. I would not be surprised to see residential coal burning come up sometime. None of them have jobs so they have plenty of time to think of the next stupid idea.
Again it's not BOTTOM ASH!
... and yanche, round up a thousand of these clowns and find out how many even know the difference or care. Only a little fly ash? They won't care and it could be like asbestos or plutonium, there is no acceptable minimum level. You give them too much credit.

"F" Obama, and "F" the EPA. They're going to have to find me and catch me for my coal ash disposal. I put it on my gravel driveway and fill in a sink hole across the road.

@yanche......unfortunately you give them waaaaay to much credit for having any level of common sense and ability to apply their limited technical knowledge.

Like me, I know you have worked on gov't contracts....think about some of the requirements you have surely had to work around and between to get your job done......you should know better than that! :P

A good one I heard this past winter from the maintenance manager at a local plant that makes medical needles is that he has to go through an FDA authorized verification checklist and get three management signatures for any landscaping work on the property. If they don't have them on file they get a 'violation' from the FDA and lose their approval for the needles. So any snow plowing, grass cutting, flower bed mulching, tree trimming, leaf raking, etc, is covered.
I drive a VW TDI, heat my home & workshop with two coal stokers and have two vintage JD diesel tractors....
The EPA just loves me!!

I am aware of the issues when a constant stream of 'legal engineering' and while some may be needed, the gross misuse of power causes all of us severe mistrust and lack of respect for REAL issues.

Yanche knows of what he speaks, so once again, 'keep you friends close and your enemies closer'.

It's only not flyash because of how it's burned in a home appliance or stoker. Most of our "flyash" is mixed with the bottom ash.

As far as powerplant flyash being regulated, it shouldn't be any more regulated than any other pile of dirt, sand, or earth.

I think the problem with industrial fly ash is that it's kept in raised earth ponds filled with water to keep the dust down. The problem is when the embankment breaches and a flood of water and coal ash wash away some house or towns.
No matter where you go,......there you are.

That's right, the problem isn't the material, it's the maintenance or engineering of the storage. Regardless, the likelihood of runaway flyash slurry taking you out is rare indeed.

Years ago (& some not too distant) flyash was dumped both legally & not just about anywhere, normally in valleys & any streams weren't diverted of protected but just dumped over. Even today they have to divert of protect any ground water but the open side of the dump is just covered over with a certain amount of earth. If the area wasn't correctly installed to divert water then the problem starts, properly constructed & compacted that flyash becomes a almost solid mass, once full it is then covered with earth graded for drainage, seeded with a grass like rye & even trees planted. As with anything it's the early & illegal ones that cause problems, there is a long section of I-279 that runs from downtown Pittsburgh that was built on top of proper flyash mixture & there have been few if any problems, it's all in the prep & installation.
The outfit I hauled for also used untreated dry flyash to fill in the old Nike missile Silo Sites because basically in a area like that it flows somewhat like water & fills all voids then capped. The same with some old coal mine shafts & vents & even on capping the melted down reactor at Westinghouses Waltz Mills Site. The Gov. knows where & how the current flyash is used.
