Morning after update. ..... installed a manual damper, digital thermostat and sealed up the flue pipe at the thimble. Set draft and played around with the temp switch to control fan run times. It was about 16 degrees last night and it was 74 inside this morning (that's what the temp is set to) and he had a large bed of coals still. He put like 3 shovel fulls of coal on it this morning and usually puts 7 or 8 so it's a large improvement. Draft is holding well also. The damper is almost closed do he has excellent draft but it was just throwing all his heat outside. So far so good. Thanks again.
