This seems like conjecture as heat transfer surface area and fan or none are very large factors. The amount of unheated air that can be passed over the stove and keeps it temperature at a realistic level is the governing factor along with how much raw input is possible. Saying that if you have available raw input of 90k btu/hr. and surface area that allows 40k btu/hr. without damaging the stove it is 40k not 90k. Wood stoves are rated with wood you will never burn long term and tops glowing red hot something else you would never do. Cutting them in half is generally a good start as well. Some of the ratings are pretty hard to believe for an un-baffled steel box of small size.

I agree. Ever since Franco B pointed me in that direction, I have been a big proponent of cutting the mfgr's BTU ratings in half to bring them into the realm of reality. This being for hand fired stoves. For stokers the feed rate determines the BTUH input and thereby the potential BTUH output.ddahlgren wrote:....
