thanks all, keep em coming ..i do have a keley cook stove,white porcilin ,probably made in the 40's,and a 23000btu kero heater do you guys/girls think the cook stove will maintain once it is heated up?? no big fan of any thing oil,screw dem arabs!!!

I have a cook stove out in my garage (24'X26' & insulated), when burning coal in it, I can get 8-10 hr. burn times in it. For cooking, you would need higher temps so that time would go down some. It kept the garage at 70° a couple of weeks ago when it was only 2°out. When burning wood in the cook stove, you have to feed it every hour but you can get higher temps with wood.

thanks photo200(randy) that encouragement really helps, think I will give it a try, why spend more $$ when I have something that might work, the 8 to 10 hr burn times will be great for overnight ,with no phone,tv.,vcr/dvd they will have something to do during the day..

Run whatcha brung ! If it's on the property and paid for,well,I think that'll work ! gives you time to keep your eyeballs peeled for a killer deal on a stove that will take over and go longer. Do your chimney/flue right,and you've got it!

And they can make you lunch on it too!

There is a real upside to the cook stove as with a tiny bit of backyard engineering you could end up with a reasonable amount of warm water to wash up every night and it does not take much. In the summer a couple of solar water heaters and done then too. They are not much more than a large heavy plastic bag hung on a pole and instant shower. I have a ton of easy back yard ideas as I wanted what you have and there is no town around here that will let me build one, but you can live in a tent go figure..

Not to be a "putz" here, (givin the surroundings), but wouldn't a wood stove be a better candidate for a weekend warrior? Quick and easy, and probably plenty of wood to be had. (Just sayin)

My kitchen is slightly smaller than your cabin.

My 1903 Glenwood range is a bit smaller than average of the early 1900 kitchen ranges. It keeps that uninsulated kitchen at 68-70 with tall windows, three doors open to other rooms and an air register over head to a bed room above, on the coldest days (below zero). Like Randy's stove it can easily go over night 10-11 hours after a good shake down, fill up, and damped down. Uses about 30 pounds of nut coal a day.

And like Randy's, you open up the dampers more to get it hotter to cook/bake (650-700), as opposed to just heating (500-600). But, so far coal use per day hasn't gone past normal when we're doing a lot of cooking. Still working on figuring out why ?

When I close the three doors, the kitchen gets too hot except with the stove damped down to it's lowest run settings.

You can pick up working Glenwood Model C ranges (bigger then mine) for a few hundred dollars on Craig's list.

If you could use it, I have a nice "Warm Morning" - in fact two (one for spare parts) that I'd sell you. Works great. Might have to use the "low" setting, but I don't think there's any better for what you want.

Jotul 404 is a small cookstove. 24,000 BTU 26 wide ,32 tall for proper cook height and 20 deep. You would have to find it used or new old stock because sales of this model are discontinued in this country. They were re-introduced to this country for the supposed great [year2000] century changeover computer crash when the fear mongers were talking "grid goes down". Not much happened to the computers or sales of these sweet little beauties. After all when you get to your hideaway you want utility, performance and beauty too. The only limitation I can see is a relatively small firebox. Mike
