HELLO ALL,
I OWN A ROYALL OUTDOOR PRESSURIZED WOOD/COAL FURNACE. I'VE DONE WOOD ALL MY LIFE AND JUST STARTED WITH COAL. MY QUESTION IS HOW DO I KNOW WHEN TO ADD COAL TO A (COAL ) FIRE THAT'S ALREADY BURNING? IT HAS SHAKER GRATES AND I AM STILL NOT SURE WHEN AND HOW TO SHAKE THEM PROPERLY.THE ONE THING I HAVE GOT DOWN TO A PERFECT SCEINCE IS PUTTING THE COAL FIRE OUT!!!! THANKS FOR ANY HELP.

Keep a coal fire as deep as possible, fill the firebox from side to side, with no gaps and as deep as possible. Fill it to the top of the firebrick. Coal likes to have a deep firebed. You control the heat output by controling the air to the underside of the firebed, through the ash pan area. You should have very little or no air entering the firebox above the coal, this is only reducing the draft that is needed to pull combustion air through the coal fire.
