Broken Triplex Grate

Modern and vintage hand fired coal stove are similar to a wood stove and in some cases can burn either. They need to be regulated and fed by hand usually every 12 to 24 hours depending on your usage. They require no power to operate making them ideal for rural settings with long power outages.

Stove/Furnace Make: Sumbeam Cabinet Heater
Stove/Furnace Model: Fox Furnace Series X-1

I have a Sunbeam Cabinet Heater made in 1929 by the Fox Furnace Co. After three weeks of heating I found out I had a broken triplex grate.I found out from earlier experience not parts for this old stove are available and I contacted Dave ([email protected]) and Tomahawk Foundry for a replacement. I sent a picture with measurement and was quoted a price. I shipped it off and two weeks later received the new cast grate. It was a perfect fit and my stove is up and running. The cost was $110.00 and that included return shipping!
When I first decided to restore my old stove my shaker grate was badly warped and broken in two places. Dave told me if I could make a model he could cast it. I made a wooded model of the grate and the casting from such a crude model was perfect. If your stove is hurt Tomahawk may be the prescription to bring it back to life.

Nothing better than having faith in people and then the wow factor when our expectations are overshadowed by the efforts of others! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

This is why the professional stove restorers use this place. They can cast almost anything as long as you give them something to work with.

If it's snapped in two like the one above, very often a matching hole is drilled in both pieces and a pin epoxied into the holes to re-join them. Next the joint is filled and sanded smooth. Then that glued together grate bar is sent to a foundry to be the pattern that gets pressed into the casting sand mold.

For warped grates, they can sometimes be cut into short sections and pinned and glued back together in a straight line to used as a mold pattern.

Chas,

If your stove uses the same grate bars as Josie's, try a PM to him and see if he's still active on the site. Maybe you two can work out using his wooden pattern grate to cast more.

If that doesn't work, have you tried contacting Woodmans Parts Plus ? http://www.woodmanspartsplus.com/

They may have a grate that is close to the same size that you can modify for use, or as a pattern ?????
