Hello, long time since I posted. I have a modern Tim Sistem "North" wood cookstove. It says in the manual that burning coal is possible, and I'd like to try it sometime. The "grate" is fixed cast iron and only in the middle of the firebox, so probably not something that could be reloaded easily. Perhaps it was made for the "coal briquettes" more popular in Europe. My "North" is a Serbian stove and I know coal is still popular there. Always happy to find old solid fuel range oven enthusiasts!

We avoid cooking with the electric stove unless it's just too hot for the wood burner. I imagine coal is probably more friendly for warmer weather, but I've never tried.
SpaceBus,
Unlike wood, coal produces much more ash and it's denser. Unless it's easy to poke and scrape up through the grate several times a day, you'll likely have trouble clearing coal ash well enough to keep it burning.

Also unlike wood, coal needs it's primary air feed coming in under the firebed and up through the grate. If only part of the firebox floor has openings for air feed there will very likely be dead spots where coal won't burn well. Plus, if there is much over-fire primary air, as used with wood stoves, that will just stall a coal fire.

Perfect toast and scrambled eggs off the range. Wasn't so clever with the butter but still tasted good. Particularly pleased with the colour.

Thanks guys. I had my doubts about it when the girl friend bought it for me, but after getting it set up, . . . it was love at first light ! ;)

Randy, I'd really like to read about other cook stoves. Do you know the link to SteveZee's thread ?

Yup, we use it for canning also. With so much area of the stove top it works great for boiling large canning pots. The pick below was last fall, canning some of that years black raspberry crop for our use and family Christmas presents. They even made canning pots for these old stoves. As I mentioned in another thread, the girl friend grew up learning to cook on the Rathbone and Sard Acorn range in her parents house. They had a large, oblong galvanized "canning pot", with a fitted lid. The canning pot designed to cover the two left-hand burners completely. After years in their basement, it was too full of rust pin holes to be bothered fixing.

I recently found out I can also use it for broiling/grilling without the smoke in the house. Most folks refer to that upper left hand damper door as a loading door, which you can use it for when there are pots cooking on the stove. But, sure enough, when I looked at my copy of a Glenwood manual for this Sunny model, they call it a "broiler door". I saw a picture on one of the stove restorer's sites showing them cooking a pork chop on what I call a "cooks tennis racket" that was placed in through the broiler door and sitting over the fire box. I have one of those stainless steel mesh tennis rackets that clamp the food when BBQ grilling hamburgers and hot dogs (see picture). It fits right in through that opening like it was made for it.

Now, I have yet another way I can burn food ! :D

So it is OK to cook meat over coal (rather than wood coals)? Nothing toxic?
