Those little circular holes on each side for air. Does anybody use these for other than opening them for a short time when you add coal. Leaving them slightly open, will that effect burn time? thanks

I believe your talking about the lil' flap on the side of the stove above the firepot... this is for wood burning (frankly, I never used it because the chubby works fine either way), the theory is... wood likes air to circulate around it, while coal likes air to come up through it... having this lil' vent over the firepot allows air to come in over and around the wood fire.

I've used them to help burn off gases after a fresh load of coal. I usually leave them open for 15 minutes, about long enough to get the blue ladies. I also use them when burning wood. I find a nice wood fire likes a bit of over fire air.

Doug

The air inlet on the side is there to provide some air when adding fresh coal. Helps get the Blue Ladies or "The Dancing Blue Bitches" going!! WOO HOO!

In my experience so far there are more than enough leaky spots on the Chubby to burn wood without opening the secondaries.. Around the shaker handle for instance. I find with wood there is quite draw from the cracks around the secondary flaps with them closed. My opinion is to keep'em closed. Makes sense they would help with volatile coal gas burn off, but DCrane is right, they are intended for wood burning.

Why did you go and tell DC that he was right? Never ever tell DC he was right about anything. Now he is going to think he's right all the time. Sheesh!!! ;)
