I heated with wood for about 20 years and I have a crippled body to prove it!
No such thing as free wood. This past heating season was the end of my first decade of coal burning. Wish I'd done it 30 years ago! It's a no brainer.

I burned wood for more than 20 Yrs and hope never go back to it.
The only low side when burning anthracite is the acidity for: the smoke pipe, St-St chimney...

that's like me... I got some wood from the storms for free and after lugging / stacking it on the porch and burning it for about 24 hours...I had my son go throw it all into the woods

I burned wood for the homes heat exclusively for a few years (decades ago when I was young enough to do that sort of thing), and I recall loading the stove about every 4 hours. Now I consider that madness.

You guys must of had some pretty crappy wood stoves---my BEAST could hold a 10 to 12 hr fire--of course I wasn't feeding her kindling--I did it till my late 50's & enjoyed it a lot--of course I had/have a never ending supply of wood--I switched to coal because I got to fkn old to be doing the wood routine & am real grateful I did--I also found this site which has been a God send:) Here's a pix of my wood beast which is still hooked up in the rear of the house.

I burned both over the years and after we finished the basement off I went all wood. I used to enjoy the wood gathering, mostly off the neighbors property. It did start to take a toll physically with osteoarthritis.
Also I could never get enough wood to last the winter so I ended up buying wood anyway. Started going back towards coal in 2010. I still burn wood towards the end of the season as sometimes it's there for the taking.
I just take it easier and borrow the neighbors hydraulic splitter.
That being said, here's a couple pics of some of the stacked wood down back. Oh yeah, and a few animals enjoying the early green apples.
Got Bambi with Thumper this year.

Grew up helping my father process/haul/stack firewood... Put in a New Yorker boiler when I bought my own place... Switched to coal for longer burn times/because I couldn't get the creosote under control/had to buy firewood anyhow, and don't miss the firewood ONE BIT!!!

Beautiful idyllic scene and nice yard.
Where grass is kept cut there will be few if any ticks.

I grew up burning wood. When I moved out I spent five seasons burning wood. It got old real quick. My house was always cold and I had to feed the fire every 2 hours. Since switching to coal. My house is warmer and I don't have to fill the stove half as often.
