Deep into this shoulder season, I am still burning and still a member of the 1 match club from last November. On those damp and rainy spring days, as well as nights near or below freezing, it is still nice to have the radiant heat of the black diamonds.

Ashcat and I were speaking recently about how nice it is this time of year to be getting close to the bottom of the coal bin and to burn some of the fines that have accumulated. Next year, I think I will order a half ton less of coal to be sure I go completely through my coal supply and get a fresh start in the coal bin.

I put the last load of coal in the stove last night :( it will burn for the next two or so days then the spring clean out, temps are getting into the mid 40's at night and mid 50's for the highs so now is the time to let it die. Keepaeyeonit

It is 19 degrees and windy here...not a good time to be out of coal or wood!

25* in these parts this fine April morning. Thre Vigilant will continue to heat the house on the same match it was fired up with the day after hurricane Sandy did her worst. I'll soon be digging out the steel plates and fire brick to reduce the firebox for sping weather heating. Should make it most of the way thru this month, temps will tell ;)

Yup, it's barely hitting 40* during the day here. Woke up yesterday it was 18* out. Winter doesn't want to let go.

Congrats to you one match people! Not an easy club to stay in for an entire season.

The AA is still running. We had snow last night. Yesterday was DARN cold. Fierce wind all day & never got above freezing. Today doesn't look much better.

Still in the one match club, thanx to the Hitzer--surely not my brilliance  Looks like May MIGHT be shut down. 19* w/ snow here this AM. We too are catching all sorts of wind the past couple days. Probably got 2/3 ton left.

Left Saturday morning to visit my daughter for Easter. No one here to shake my Kodiak. Came home Monday at 1300, while cleaning out to strike my second match (just WHERE is spring this year?); bed was still warm! Couldn't believe it.

Also forgot what a thorough cleaning does for the operation. Ran it lower for same output, I think I may do a clean out halfway next year...

2 more nights of this sub-freezing and it's supposed to be normal.

Temps are still scheduled for upper 20's at night in NE Pa. BUT....Weather.com predicts day time in the mid 50's coming soon like maybe in 5-6 days!!!

As for me and my house, my stove will burn until Momma says it's OK to let it go out. I don't care what the weather man says or the thermometer. After being married almost 42 years, my barometer and thermometer is Momma and what she says...goes.

Happy wife, Happy life. :D

19* this morning, frost on the grass, afternoon it will be 38-41* been that way for a week, forcast for another week.. good for maple tree sap.

The AA 260 does a fine job I just empty a half full ashpan every two days or so.

I plan to burn thru April. As long as I'm burning, I'm saving on the electric bill while keeping the house warm. I can idle her back and burn 25-30 pounds per day, tending once every 24 hours once we start seeing 50's during the day and 30's at night.

I purchased 700 pounds yesterday to give me around a 1000 pounds total to finish the season with.

Still burning and still in the one match club. Didn't even think of shutting her down yet. The Buck Model 24 has been doing a fine job. I'm really proud of the old girl. Its been a long..... cold..... winter. :!: I saw a couple of Robins in the yard today with thermal underwear and hats on. Stay warm.

I shut mine down on April 1st.
Even though the temps were chilly for the first couple
of days, I want to see how much it will cost to heat the whole
month with natural gas. It is quite reasonable now.

Usually, this time of year, the house is just "too" warm with the
stove going.
The higher sun, and warmer days, I am thinking, I can actually
keep the house comfortable, cheaper, with the NG.
By doing this, I will actually know, rather than theorize..
I've never shut it down on the first of the month.

We don't like the house 75°+, and I don't believe in windostats..
So... if I can heat the house for say 2 bucks a day with NG,
that will actually be cheaper than coal.. and easier..
We'll see...

Worse case scenario, I spend a few dollars more,
but start next season out with a little over a ton of leftover.

A personal best this year. One matched with coal in early November and transitioned to wood over a couple weeks ago without a re-light.
Think I will shut down this weekend with 60's in the near forecast. A little nippy out there today though. :)
