Help ! Coalchief Stove

Help me please! I have an old Coalchief stove and I'm having a hard time trying to find replacement parts. Mostly,I have a warped grate that I'm looking to replace. I have not started using coal. I have had the stove 20yrs and used it for burning wood. I can use all the advice offered on getting started using coal. I have found a few local sources for coal. One carries only bulk and the other bagged. I think I will go with the bagged coal as it will be a bit more convenient for handling and storage. Thanks in advance for any and all help. Linc

Thanks for the site Dallas but not the right grates. There were 2 versions of this stove, the Coalchief and the Woodchief. Mine is the Coalchief that has 2 L shaped shaker grates. I had a source from which I bought replacement grates about 10yrs ago but has since gone out of business. Linc

Bill, Any helpfull hints for a newcomer to heating with coal. I have read through some of the threads but have not had a chance to read all that many.I'm sure that it won't be long before I get most read.

BTW. The Coalchief stove looks quite similar the US Stoves Wondercoal stove.

Dallas, I found what appears to be the same grates on that site. Suburban C6-78 I'll have to check the measurements of the grates in my stove. Thank you for the site info.

I do have a question, what is the principal behind banking the coal? Does gravity feed the coal to the fire as it is burned up?

since coal burns from the bottom up when you bank coal it takes longer before the coal at the top burns. in a perfect senario the coal at the bottom burns, and in turn the stuff on top gradually falls down. this creates slower longer burn times.

Thanks Bill. That's kind of what I figured. I picked up some bags of coal today and wouldn't you know,it's going to be warmer. LOL. That's OK. Cold isn't far off.
