As I said, opinions, everyone has them. I burned wood for 18 years and grew up in a wood burning house surrounded with wood burning houses. My brother has been running a wood boiler since 93 in his home. On the coast of Eastern Maine, oak, maple, beech, etc. are not available. They do not grow there. People burned what they could to survive the winters and they were colder back then. Furthermore, when I got older and better hardwoods were available, I ran into people from those growing regions of the state that said oak or whatever was no good? At any rate, the brother does not use the good stuff in the late spring, summer, and early fall as he does not need the BTU's and junk wood is relatively free. Wood is a conundrum and all of you who think you are experts need a reality check. There are many kinds of wood and many kinds of conditions that exist between the stove and chimney, and the operator. Burn wood if you like, just pay attention to the exhaust pipe as conditions change rapidly. And I will never ever build a masonry chimney again.
Now that I am down south, these people smolder a fire all the time. Smells like the dump burning in the old days back home. Hickory, couple kinds of oak, whatever else grows here, the smoke stinks like hell. I guess they get away with it because the season is so short and they don't need much heat. As far as codes, I cannot believe the lack of them or adherence to them in this region. Sort of like the old days back home.

Being able to burn both(not at the same time unless starting a new coal bed), I ALWAYS cover my Baro with a double layer of alumium foil when burning wood solo in my handfired. I've seen the flames & I've only got one house, so......

Hopefully a coal fire wouldn't ignite any creosote from prior wood burning. Personally I feel burning wood while using a barometric damper would be risky. Awful lot of woods er I mean woulds going on there hahaha.

How much wood woulda coal burner burn if a coal burner would burn wood?

One and a third full cords of wood per ton of coal is my experience. But my experience is with wood burners burning wood and coal boilers burning coal, so I am disqualified.

Disqualified???? NONSENSE!!!!!!!! The question could be answered theoretically, literally, or a with a mixture of both. Forget everything you know concerning boundaries of logical discussion, and start anew please.....

Born there, but about 40 miles from Cleveland now.

Then when anyone says "Hey Man, What Ya Burn, Wood or Coal?" you just lookem' square in the eye n say "Both" Then they don't know what and they stop asking questions.

One night last year I was outside standing in my backyard staring into the campfire.

The wood was nice and dry, popping every so often.

This one log popped an ember onto the toe of my new running shoes. I watched that ember on my shoe, glowing way longer than I thought it would. Eventually I felt the heat and brushed it away.

The next morning I saw that the hole was burnt right thru. I could see my sock through that hole. The shoe was black and the sock was white. I still have that pair of shoes in my closet but I seldom wear them.

They were the best damn running shoes a fella could ever ask for, and I barely got to use them, much less run in them. I'm just sayin.

Curious on what you do when the daytime temps. are high 50's & nights are still 30's. I lose my chimney draft, so I have no choice but to burn wood. At least I can.....
