Harman Insert Flue Question

Modern and vintage hand fired coal stove are similar to a wood stove and in some cases can burn either. They need to be regulated and fed by hand usually every 12 to 24 hours depending on your usage. They require no power to operate making them ideal for rural settings with long power outages.

Questions for you guys, 4 days ago I got a Harman magnafire insert, the unit has the three pane glass in the door so I know it's older stove but its in beautiful condition. There was another equally as nice one with the solid glass door next to it but the wife liked the three pane better. Once I got it home and started the install, I noticed the flue goes right out the back but on my parents mark III there is like a shelf and the flue is drawn from the front to the rear. Do the inserts all draw from the rear?? I feel like I will lose heat, it's not throwing heat like my parents mark III. Would the other unit I saw have drawn from the front?? I have a sick feeling in my gut the other stove would have heated better if it does and it was only 50 bucks difference. Thanks

could you post some pictures of your new stove/insert, Id like to see this 3 pane design since I have yet to see one?

I will say that by virtue of it being a fireplace insert its going to be very hard for you to EVER feel as though the heat output is the same as a free standing stove that is radiating heat from 5 sides (so its a hard comparison to judge with your body), folks will always talk about blowers and what level of usefulness they may or may not have with a coal stove, but one fact remains that blowers CANNOT produce more heat from any stove. With a coal stove they could remove heat so fast from the firebox that improper combustion results, obviously a fireplace insert is one application where a blower can take the heated air between the stove and masonry fireplace and get it out to the living room where you want it.

Im sure in the end you could always go back and swap out for that other stove and pay the adjusted price if its a reputable dealer (so don't feel bad about doing exactly that if you choose).
