When electricity was coming around into homes they made a lamp that was sold as a gas/electric lamp . You could turn the light bulb on or use gas... Talk about dangerous ... BOOM!

For the record I still don't trust natural gas in any building.

Do you trust Propane?

Are they still made in this country? Is Ford still manufacturing the Pinto? Live and learn from engineering mistakes.

I trust propane when it's feuling an appliance designed for it. I don't think its wise to have a idle, valved charged line, capped or uncapped, near a burning solid fuel appliance. I've experienced those valves leaking, new and old.

Not really! The only thing I use gases for is welding operations. I'm not a fan of using for anything else. The first thing I did when I bought my house was to call the company that had two large propane tanks on the side of my house and told them to remove them and then I ripped out the lines to the house. I understand it's "selling point" and it quick water heating capabilities but other than that I don't see the fuss. I grew up down the street from a house that blew up from gas. When I was born my folks and me almost died because the pilot light in the apt went out and my dad happened to wake up and smell gas. Just about a year ago a house near me blew up because of gas. And when I say blew up I mean it look like a bomb landed in the house and shot debree 100's of feet away! we are always having gas leaks in Richmond , you can smell it when you drive in the city!

Although NG is fueling the turbines at the power plants right now because it's so cheap from breaking the shale .

I just wondered what went through people's heads when they came up with these stoves or those lamps. I don't even cook with propane In a grill lol.

And all these years I thought it was coming from the government. So in a way, I was right.......

If the gas line was connected to a gas log set in a fireplace "vented or unvented"
Would that not be an open flame? Ok What if there was a leak
My gas stove has 6 open flames.
It has never burst into flames.
By the time that pipe got hot enough there would be no house left
Burning coal is like having 30lbs of Magma you can't control if it gets away its gone
Try turning the coal fire off in an instant
Can a CO Detector shut down a wood/coal stove?
What about Oil Stoves I know oil now is $$$ now
But soon all energy will be priced per BTU
Safety? Not coal or wood for sure, Sorry I know this form is for burning wood/coal
I had a coal stoker all my life a Van Wert And a Simplex They made todays stoves look like a joke
Would I want one Now, NO. However if all went to hell I would burn Wood in a very small stove.

Modern appliances designed to burn gas are fine.

Accidents can be prevented by eliminating risks. Think it all the way through.

I don't think most people here on the forum are particularly biased against gas. I have literally begged the utility company to run a line down my street and they refuse.

Coal is still less expensive than heating with propane. Some of us just like the ambiance of having a solid fuel appliance, and enjoy the tasks of caring for the fire that will keep you warm all season.

Don't bet on it. We're talking about different fuels, from different sources and varying production costs.

Properly installed, these options carry little risk of fire or CO poisoning. No danger with gas? How about a rotted out heat exchanger on a gas furnace? Never saw that one before?

Good Point
People burning Coal/Wood tend to be more "With It" as here and now, aware of whats going on.
I find some people can't even light there own pilot now days let alone tend a stove
