You don't need to rip up additional flooring - consider putting plywood on the floor and building your hearth addition on that. That's what we did. The weight of the materials and stove holds the plywood and hearth addition in place while leaving the hardwood floor underneath undamaged. Our hearth is brick so some quarter round molding nailed to the plywood edge gives it a finished look. That way if for some reason you decide to close up that chimney, you can remove the hearth addition if you want to without requiring expensive hardwood flooring repairs. I don't know that we will ever have a need to move our hearth and as heavy as it is It would be a real pain. However, having done this we do have the option. DK is big on options. Take care, Lisa
